DESCRIPTION

Michigan City Indiana was established in 1830 at the mouth of Trail Creek. Today, it is a part of the huge 'Chicagoland' urban megalopolis. It has always been an important harbor and a recent multi-million dollar harbor improvement project underlines the city's intent to stay that way. Located at the edge of the 15,000 acre Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park, it is still possible to see the skyline of Chicago on the distant horizon.

APPROACHES

The approaches are clear from all directions. It is always prudent to keep offshore at least 1/2 and preferably 1 nm to avoid any shoals or close-in obstructions.

Michigan City Indiana is located at the mouth of Trail Creek. The entrance to the harbor is protected by a breakwater that lies offshore approximately 1600 ft/500m. It is marked with a Fl RED light at its northerly end and a Fl YELLOW light at the southerly end. The channel entrance is protected by piers. The easterly pier is marked at the end by an Occ WHITE light and the end of the westerly pier is marked with a Fl RED light. A good marker to pick up offshore are the stacks of the powerplant near the mouth of Trail Creek.

Once you enter Trail Creek proper, keep an eye for the entrance to the yacht basin, about 500 ft/150 m on your port.

THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT

Michigan City Indiana is home to the Blue Chip Casino, a riverboat gambling casino located south of Washington Park Marina. The Old Lighthouse Museum is Indiana's oldest lighthouse and is filled with artifacts and displays about Indiana's Great Lake's history.

To the south, lies Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore park with its miles of beaches and hiking trails. Mt. Baldy is a well-know, very high .67mi/1.1km sand dune that is continually moving south at a rate of 3 - 4 fr /1m per year.

A quick look at this Michigan City tourism site will give you some ideas on getting the most of your visit.
