Michigan City Indiana was established in 1830 at the mouth of Trail Creek. Today, it is a part of the huge 'Chicagoland' urban megalopolis. It has always been an important harbor and a recent multi-million dollar harbor improvement project underlines the city's intent to stay that way. Located at the edge of the 15,000 acre Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park, it is still possible to see the skyline of Chicago on the distant horizon.

The approaches are clear from all directions. It is always prudent to keep offshore at least 1/2 and preferably 1 nm to avoid any shoals or close-in obstructions.

Michigan City Indiana is located at the mouth of Trail Creek. The entrance to the harbor is protected by a breakwater that lies offshore approximately 1600 ft/500m. It is marked with a Fl RED light at its northerly end and a Fl YELLOW light at the southerly end. The channel entrance is protected by piers. The easterly pier is marked at the end by an Occ WHITE light and the end of the westerly pier is marked with a Fl RED light. A good marker to pick up offshore are the stacks of the powerplant near the mouth of Trail Creek.

Once you enter Trail Creek proper, keep an eye for the entrance to the yacht basin, about 500 ft/150 m on your port.

Washington Park Marina   (219) 872-1712   VHF 9
This municipally-owned marina is located in the Outer Basin, on your port side as you enter the harbor. The Outer Basin entrance is marked with a Fl GREEN light. Washington Park Marina has undergone a significant redevelopment and now has over 600 slips. A number are set aside for transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) as well as pumpout station. There is water and power available dockside. There are maintenance and repair services available for engine and mechanical work. There are restrooms and showers and a laundry facility. Amenities include picnic areas and BBQ grills. There is internet access.

Michigan City Yacht Club   (219) 979-3363   VHF 9
MCYC is located in the Outer Basin, close to the USCG station. There are transient slips available. Their club house shares the building with a bar/restaurant in the basin. There are restrooms available.

Trail Creek Marnia   (219) 879-4300   VHF 9
Moving up Trail Creek, just beyond the bascule bridge, is Trail Creek Marina - on your port side. There are several transient slips available here. The bridge opens on the 1/4 and 3/4 mark each hour. There is a fuel dock (gasoline only) and pumpout station. Water and power are available dockside. There are restrooms, showers and laundry facilities. There is also a picnic area with BBQ grills.

B & E Marine is a full-service yard. It is located up Trail Creek, just beyond Trail Creek Marina, on your port side. There are no transient docks but there is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and pumpout station. They offer a wide range of repair and maintenance services including engine work, mechanical, fibreglass and canvass repair work. They have a haulout facility as well. There is a well-stocked chandlery on site.

Lakeshore Foods is located on the edge of the downtown and can meet your provisioning needs.

There is a Fifth Third Bank branch in town.

St. Anthony Memorial Health Centre (219 879-8511 is located in downtown Michigan City Indiana.

Fagan Pharmacy (219) 879-8620 is located downtown.

There are a number of restaurants across Michigan City Indiana and some suggestion would include there.

12 On The Lane is located in the Outer Basin. It shares premises with Michigan City Yacht Club. It has a good reputation for its food and is a real gathering place for sailors.

Shoreline Brewery has a variety of micro beers on tap plus regular pub fare.

Bridges Waterside Cafe is tucked away by Trail Creek. Casual food in a relaxed setting.

Galveston Steak House is a family-style restaurant. There is live entertainment in their lounge.

Michigan City Indiana is home to the Blue Chip Casino, a riverboat gambling casino located south of Washington Park Marina. The Old Lighthouse Museum is Indiana's oldest lighthouse and is filled with artifacts and displays about Indiana's Great Lake's history.

To the south, lies Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore park with its miles of beaches and hiking trails. Mt. Baldy is a well-know, very high .67mi/1.1km sand dune that is continually moving south at a rate of 3 - 4 fr /1m per year.

A quick look at this Michigan City tourism site will give you some ideas on getting the most of your visit.
