DESCRIPTION


Manistique MI is a small town located on the north coast of upper Lake Michigan. It is the only major port along the north coast between the entrance to Green Bay and the Straits of mackinac. Manistique is an excellent harbor offering good, all-round protection under all weather conditions. It is a good place to lay over and the town offers most of what a cruising sailor could need. It is a pretty place to visit.

APPROACHES


When approaching Manistique MI harbor entrance, plan to line up with it .5 to .75 nm out. This will keep you clear of the shoals found inland on your port and starboard. A course of 030oT should bring you right in. The ends of the seawalls or marked with an ISO RED light and horn and a Fl GREEN light. Once inside the harbor seawalls, continue on 030oT until you reach the river mouth. Alter course to approximately 337oT and hold for about .25 nm. This will bring you to the entrance to Manistique Municipal Marina.

MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES

is a small marina with docking for approximately 20 transient sailors. There is a fuel dock (gasoline only). Diesel is available within 1 mi/1.6 km for the marina but it cannot be delivered in. There is a pumpout station. Water and power are available at all slips. Restrooms and showers are available at the marina. Laundry facilities are available in town. Amenities include picnic areas and BBQ grills. Public transportation into town is available on-site.

Anchoring Anchoring is available in the outer basin. Keep an eye out for weather disturbances from the south or southeast.

REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE, PROVISIONING, BANKS/ATM's


There is no facility for major repairs or maintenance in Manistique MI. The Harbor Master may be able to assist with contacts to local trades. There is a large auto parts store in the town.

Jack's Fresh Market can handle reprovisioning requirements. It is about .5 mi/1 km from the marina.

There are a number of banks in town, all with ATM's. State Savings Bank - Manistique is about .25 mi/.4 km from the marina.

MEDICAL SERVICES


Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital (906) 341-3200 is located about 1 mi/1.6 km away.

There are several pharmacies in Manistique. Putvin Health Mart (906) 341-5494 is likely the closest to the marina.

PLACES TO EAT


There are a number of restaurants around town. Here are a few to consider. Floyd's Family Restaurant and Ann Marie's Family Dining are casual family restaurants. The Upper Crust Cafe and Bakery focuses on homemade breads, pasteries and sandwiches and cafe-style meals. Marley's Bar and Grill is a casual bar with standard pub offerings.

THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT


If departure weather is a bit of a gamble for you, an alternative could be Kewadin Casino, just a few miles from the marina. They will even come and pick you up. Most of Manistique's appeal and points of interest though are natural. There are beaches, parks and lots of walking trails. An interesting day trip is to Seul Choix Point lighthouse, about 11 mi/23 km east of town. Built in 1895, it has a museum and lovely park grounds.
