Named after the French city of Dunkerque, Dunkirk, NY was initially settled in the early 1800's. By the 2nd half of the century, it had become an important railroad hub and shipping center. This, in turn, lead to a burgeoning industrial base that carried the city through much of the 20th century. Today, Dunkirk NY is an attractive destination for cruising sailors.

The approaches to Dunkirk NY are clear from all directions. The harbor is marked with the 3 stacks of the Dunkirk Generating Plant. At 310 ft / 94.5 m, they are visible in good weather for 20.6 nm. The stacks are lit at night. The harbor is protected by a seawall and the entrance is at the west end, by the power station.

Sailor need to clear Point Gratiot. It is marked by the Dunkirk Light, an OCC WHITE light visible for 16 mi/13.4 nm. Clearing the Point, you will see a marker buoy - RED "N4" to the east. The harbor is open on the east side. However, the water depth range from 10 ft / 3 m to 1 ft/.3 m. For safety, stay on the outside of the breakwater until you reach the channel. It is marked by a pair of buoys - RED "N4" and GREEN "C3". Follow a course of 133oT to pass through the breakwater.
