DESCRIPTION

Established in 1870, Cedar Point Ohio is home to the oldest amusement park in the United States. Names one of the best such parks in the world, it occupies the point that forms the northern side to Sandusky Bay. It is also the most visited amusement park in the US with several million visitors each year. The park operates a large, well-run marina on its property, adjacent to the attractions. On a personal note, Cedar Point Ohio was the destination of my first long-distance cruise when I purchsed my sailboat.

APPROACHES

The approaches to Cedar Point Ohio are clear from all directions. Enter Sandusky Bay by way of the charted Moseley Channel. The Channel begins about .65 nm NW of the end of the Sandusky Breakwater. The Channel entrance is marked with a Fl RED light ("R2") and a Fl GREEN light and Bell ("G1"). The end of the Sandusky Breakwater is marked with a Fl WHITE light visible 6.4 nm offshore. This light is paired with a Fl RED light and Horn ("R4"). Moseley Channel lies on a range of 237o T.

Stay within the channel markers and follow the Channel around the Point until you reach the RED/GREEN bifurcation buoy marked "E" on charts. This will be the next buoy past the "R14" channel marker. As you proceed from "R14" to the bifurcation buoy, you will see on your starboard the Bay Channel range on a line of 063.25o T. As you cross the range, alter course to 081o T and proceed to the F GREEN light marking the entrance to the marina. This will keep you in at least 7 ft/2.1 m as shown on your chart.

At the marina entrance, alter course to 358oT to enter the marina.

NOTE: This is also a ferry route so keep a sharp lookout.

MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES

Cedar Point Marina   (419) 627-2334   VHF 68

Cedar Point Marina is a full-service marina with about 100 slips for transient sailors. This is a very popular destination so a call ahead to reserve a slip would likely be a good idea. You can also just tie up to the day to visit the park. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and a pumpout station. Water, power, television and internet hookups are available dockside. The marina has a full marine service department. They are able to carry out full engine, mechanical, electrical and hull repairs and maintenance. They have a travel lift. Restrooms, showers and laundry are available Other amenities include an outdoor pool and spa and access to a beach on Lake Erie that is 1.6 mi/2.6 km long. By far though, the main attraction is the Park. As a transient sailor, you are considered a guest at the resort and able to purchase discounted entry and ride tickets at the marina office. These will be cheaper than any of the other so-called 'discount' tickets you will see in various local businesses or on-line.
