DESCRIPTION

As you can tell from it's name, the roots of Au Gres lie with early French adventurers who explored this are in the 18th century. The name derives from the French expression for 'sandstone'. The first permanent settlement took place following the Civil War and the local economy was based on lumbering. Today, the economic foundation of Au Gres is tourism.

APPROACHES

The port of Au Gres is located approximately 2.5 nm up the Au Gres River. When approaching the entrance to the river mouth, stay about 1-2 nm offshore as the waters surrounding the entrance channel are shallow. The river entrance is approached via a channel .8 nm in length. The best place to begin your entry into Au Gres is the Gravelly Shoal Light, positioned approximately 5.3 nm due east from the channel entrance. From the Gravelly Shoal Light, lay a course of 270oT. This will bring you to the outer channel markers. Note: along that course line, you may encounter submerged net stakes.

The outer markers are a RED nun buoy marked "2" on your chart and a GREEN can buoy marked "1". At those bouys, alter your course to approximately 305o T. The channel entrance itself is marked by a Keep to the center of the channel. The depth drops to approximately 6 fr/2 m when you enter the river proper, about .8 nm from the channel entrance. Continuing up the river about .6 nm, you will find the Au Gres Yacht Club on your port. If you continue another .75 nm up the river, you will see the Au Gres State Harbor on your port.

If you continue up the river beyond the Au Gres Yacht Club, proceed slowly, expecially if your draft is approaching 6 ft. The river can get shallow. Just beyond the Au Gres State Harbor is the Hwy 23 bridge. Sail vessels cannot proceed further upstream.
