DESCRIPTION

Established in 1804 as the Baldoon Settlement, Wallaceburg Ontario (named after one of Scotland's greatest heros) has grown to a prosperous community of 11,000. Wallaceburg lies 9 nm upstream from the St Clair River.

The Baldoon Settlement, sponsored by Lord Selkirk, struggled, especially during the War of 1812. Selkirk himself gave up on the settlement - but the settlers themselves did not.

Early industry centred on the lumbering trade but in time the economy grew to include glass, sugar and brass. The forerunner of the famous Lee-Enfield rifle was created here and the prototype model today rests in the Wallaceburg & District Museum.

APPROACHES

Wallaceburg lies 9 nm or about 1.5 hours up the Chenal Ecarte river from the St. Clair River. Chenal Ecarte (French for blind or dead end) is commonly pronounced sny carty and is sometimes shown as the Sny River. The river is entered between Algonac MI and port Lambert ON. Approroximately .25 nm north of channel marker A36 (Fl RED), on the west side, you will see a NORTH cardinal marker (Black over Yellow) designated XE and a RED lateral buoy XE72. There is a range running SE between these two on a bearing of 138.5°T. Enter Chenal Ecarte on this range. Charted depths exceed 14 ft/4 m.

Proceed up the river at a slow speed. "No Wake" rules are enforced. Walpole Island swing bridge is located approximately 3.5 nm up river. It opens on the hour between 0700 and 2300 [signal is 3 long blasts; telephone number is (519) 627-6823].

Approximately 1.7 nm upstream from the bridge is the junction with Johns Canal on your starboard. Turn to port at this junction and continue to follow the river. Approximately 1.9 nm further upstream is a cable ferry. DO NOT attempt to pass while the ferry is crossing. During operations, the cable may be at or near the water surface. Wait until all operations have ceased and the cable is relaxed and laying on the bottom. Continue upstream for about 1 nm until you reach the junction with the Sydenham River. At the junction, turn to port and continue upstream. Wallaceburg lies about 2 nm upstream from the junction.
