DESCRIPTION

Ontonagon MI takes its name from the Ojibwa word for 'bowl' or 'bowl-shaped'. First settled in the 1830's, Ontonagon was a center for mineral exploration - especially for copper. By the late 1800's, Ontonagon had also become a lumbering center and the harbor served a votal role in getting both refined copper and timber shipped out. Copper is still refined here and the village has also become a year-round tourism center.

As with any community along this rugged coastline of Lake Superior, the scenery here is stunning and varied. Michigan's largest state park is nearby and the oldest remaining log village in the United States is not far away. The village sits at the mouth of the Ontonagon River, the largest river on the south shore of Lake Superior.
