DESCRIPTION Chagrin River harbor located at Eastlake OH, a city of 19,000 just east of Cleveland. Although there are various explanations offered for the origin of its name, it is generally accepted to be an English corruption of the name of the French settler who built the first trading post in the area - Sieur de Saguin. Chagrin River is home to a number of yacht clubs and marinas. With over 1,000 slips, this is a very popular boating harbor. |

APPROACHES The approaches to Chagrin River are clear from all directions. The best course to enter the river is approximately 142°T the river mouth is protected by two breakwaters. The west breakwater is marked with an outer Fl RED light visible 6 nm and an inner F RED light. The east breakwater is marked with a Fl GREEN light visible 6 nm. If there are strong winds out of the NE, gaining the entrance to the river can be challenging. On busy weekends, heavy traffic in the river can create a rough entry, so be prepared. |

MARINAS, YACHT CLUBS, MOORINGS, ANCHORAGES Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club (440) 942-0299 VHF 16 CLYC is located immediately inside the river mouth, on the west side. It is a large club and generally first choice for visiting sailors. They have about 90 slips with 6-7 available for transient sailors on a reciprocal basis. There is a fuel dock (diesel and gasoline) and a pumpout station. Water and power are available at slips. Their lovely clubhouse has restrooms and showers. There is a restaurant and bar/lounge in the clubhouse as well. There are two outdoor pavillions and picnic areas. Internet service is available. Sima Marine (440) 269-3200 Sima Marine is a full-service marine, located approximately .5 nm upstream on the east side of the river. They have 130 slips with approximately a dozen set aside for transient sailors. They can carry out a full range of mechanical, electrical, fibreglass and canvas repairs. Thiere is no fuel dock or pumpout station but water and power are available at each slip. Lake County Yacht Club (440) 953-8131 LCYC is located around the bend from Sima Marine. Follow the shoreline on your left and it will be on your starboard. They have 82 slips with several available for transient sailors on a reciprocal basis. There is no fuel dock but they do have a pumpout station. Water and power are available dockside. There are restrooms and showers in the clubhouse. The clubhouse has a large kitchen for meal preparation. Outdoor amenities include a children's playground, heated swimming pool and picnic areas with a pavillion. West Channel Yacht Club (440) 942-9655 WCYC is situated about .67 nm upriver. They may have 2-3 slips available for transient sailors on a reciprocal basis. There is no fuel dock or pumpout station. Water and power are available at slips. There are restrooms and showers in the clubhouse. There is a heated swimming pool and picnic areas on the grounds. |

REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE, PROVISIONING, BANKS/ATM's Sima Marine (See above) South Shore Yacht Supply is a full-service marine repair facility. It is located about .75 nm up the Chagrin River, just beyond the West Channel Yacht Club, on the west side of the river. They can carry out engine, mechanical, electrical, fibreglass and woodworking repairs. They have 5 slips available for vessels. There is water and power hookups at the slips. There are restrooms and shower facilities in the main building. There are no grocery stores at the river mouth. The nearest grocery store is a Giant Eagle Supermarket in Eastlake, about 3 miles/5 km from the Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club. Steel Valley Federal Credit Union has counter and ATM service. It is located about 1.5 mi/2.5 km from the Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club. |

PLACES TO EAT Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club has a dining room that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Friday to Sunday. They also have a bar/lounge that is open year round. Trader Jack's is located on the river, just past South Shore Yacht Services. It is about a 30 minute walk or a short boat ride up the river. It has a large classic American pub menu with a wide selection of meals. And naturally, on this lake, that includes Lake Erie perch. A very attractive feature is its outdoor riverside patio. |

THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT Chagrin River is a nice place to stop and enjoy a quiet time before the hustle and bustle of Cleveland, two hours west. As with many harbors along the American coast of Lake Erie, there are beautiful beaches and terrific sunsets.
