DESCRIPTION

Barcelona New York lies within the municipality of Westfield, NY, just east of the mouth of the Chautaugua River. Originally known as Portland, the village was laid out in 1813. In 1836, Portland changed its name to Barcelona, apparently at the urging of a local businessman who had spent some time in Barcelona, Spain.

An important harbor in the 1830'snd 1840's, Barecelona saw its fortunes wane with the coming of the railroads. Later, it became part of the Town of Westfield.

This is grape and wine country. It was here that Welch's Grape Juice Company was incorporated. Westfield itself is a quiet town of about 5,000 persons, centered about 2 mi/3.2 km south of the harbor. The harbor and surrounding area are rural in nature - there are some 30,000 acres of vineyards - and it is a delightful place to visit.

APPROACHES

The approaches to Barcelona New York are clear from all directions. The harbor is formed with two long breakwaters which will provide good protection for vessels inside. There is a Fl RED on the end of the west breakwall and a Fl GREEN on the end of the east breakwall. Each light is visible approximately 6 mi/ 5 nm offshore. The west breakwall has been extended by about 240 ft/73 m with riprap.

A quick look at the chart will tell you that this harbor has shallow areas and you need to exercise caution. The channel is unmarked but a course of 190°T will bring you in to the marina. The municipal dock is on the east side of the harbor, across from the marina.

THINGS TO DO/SEE/VISIT

The beaches along Lake Erie are beautiful and offer a real opportunity for some quiet relaxation. On the east side of the town dock is a lovely public beach. Also, west of the harbor, is a long public beach which you can follow right to the mouth of the Chautaugua River.

This is wine country and the region is home to nearly 2 dozen wineries. There are two in the Westfield area - Johnson Estate Winery and Nobel Winery These could be fun to visit (and sample their wares) but obviously, you would need transportation to get there.

There are a number of antique shops in Westfield that could be fun to explore. Don't miss the Sea Lion, a replica of a 16th Century 3-masted English square rigger. She stands on the beach at the harbor. There is also the Barcelona New York / Westfield NY site that will give you some other ideas on getting the most of your visit.
